  1. My many experiences throughout the years with USDOT, and the Florida and Georgia DOTs, have convinced me that the public hearings conducted by these agencies are no consequence whatsoever. From what I have observed, the NCDOT might be more attentive to what “the people” truly want. I am now in the process of writing a document about the building of roads and highways in America since the 1920s. At the present time for example, many of the politicians who like to be viewed as “Conservatives,” seem to believe, or have been made to believe that Amtrak, and/or intercity rail-passenger transportation is the only mode that requires Federal subsidies. Of course, to begin with, these same “neo-Conservative” politicians state that they would like to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. This is outright contradictory. All, but all modes of transportation require subsidies, but throughout the years the USDOT has been concealing this fact in a very subtle manner. From the research I’ve been conducting during this last year, I believe that Amtrak’s original requested budget for 2012 was 1.6 billion Dollars, but total Federal highway and road – related projects are at the 40 billion-level. In the notice that I received from Congressman Schuler not that long ago, the total amount of the projects he mentions is over 540 million Dollars, in his district alone. I like Cong. Schuler, and I voted for him, but I’d like to question/talk to him about this issue. By the way, I am a real/true Conservative, for I am a veteran of the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion, in Cuba, and throughout the past 50 years, and except for the time I’ve dedicated to transportation since 1975, when I graduated from college, fighting for the freedom of my homeland has been my quest.

I think it is time we stopped building new roads and to repair what we have already. TM
